NEW YORK: Kira-kira 100,000 kanak-kanak terjejas akibat gempa bumi kuat yang melanda Maghribi Jumaat lepas, kata Agensi Kanak-Kanak PBB (UNICEF) pada Isnin.
”Walaupun UNICEF masih belum mengetahui jumlah sebenar kanak-kanak yang terbunuh dan cedera, anggaran terkini dari 2022 menunjukkan kanak-kanak mewakili hampir satu pertiga daripada populasi di Maghribi,” Agensi Anadolu (AA) melaporkan agensi itu dalam satu kenyataan.
Lebih 300,000 orang telah terjejas di Marrakesh dan di pergunungan High Atlas berikutan gempa bumi berukuran 6.8 magnitud, menurut anggaran PBB.
Lebih 2,000 penduduk maut termasuk kanak-kanak manakala ribuan lagi cedera, kata Kementerian Dalam Negeri Maghribi.
Pihak berkuasa bimbang jumlah itu akan meningkat.
Marrakesh, Tapak Warisan Dunia UNESCO mengalami kerosakan teruk akibat gempa bumi kuat itu, lapor pihak berkuasa.
Pasukan penyelamat pada Isnin terus menggiatkan usaha mencari penduduk yang terperangkap buat hari ketiga.
Beberapa pasukan penyelamat asing telah pun tiba di negara itu untuk menyertai usaha menyelamat mangsa.
Maghribi setakat ini telah menerima tawaran bantuan dari Sepanyol, Britain, Qatar dan Emiriah Arab Bersatu.
Pada Ahad, kerajaan Maghribi melancarkan akaun khas dengan perbendaharaan dan Bank Pusat Maghribi akan menerima sumbangan untuk mangsa gempa. — AlHijrah Online
