KAJANG: Pilihan raya pihak berkuasa tempatan (PBT) tidak perlu diadakan kerana ia hanya akan mencetuskan kegusaran politik, demikian pandangan Ahli Majlis Tertinggi (MT) UMNO Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan.
Beliau yang juga Timbalan Menteri Kerja Raya turut menzahirkan keyakinan Kerajaan Perpaduan tidak akan meluluskan syor Pengerusi DAP Kuala Lumpur Tan Kok Wai itu yang mencadangkan kerajaan memulakan pilihan raya PBT di ibu negara terlebih dahulu bagi menyemarakkan demokrasi di Wilayah Persekutuan.
“Pada pandangan saya, tidak perlu (pilihan raya PBT). Saya selaku ahli MKT (UMNO), tidak mahu bertambah runcing perkauman di negara kita ini,” katanya kepada media selepas melawat Lembaga Lebuhraya Malaysia (LLM) di sini hari ini, sebagai mengulas gesaan Tan yang mahu kerajaan memulakan pilihan raya PBT di ibu negara sebagai langkah memperkukuh demokrasi.
Ahmad berkata pilihan raya PBT tidak perlu diadakan memandangkan sistem PBT itu sendiri seperti Majlis Perbandaran atau Dewan Bandaraya dianggotai oleh wakil pelbagai kaum.
“Cukuplah Pilihan Raya Negeri dan Parlimen, kenapa perlu ada pilihan raya satu lagi,” katanya.
Pilihan raya PBT di Malaysia digantung pelaksanaan pada 1960-an sebelum digantikan dengan sistem lantikan ketua iaitu Datuk Bandar dan Yang DiPertua Majlis termasuk ahli majlis.–AlHijrah Online
