NEW DELHI: Umat Islam di India pada Selasa mengecam keputusan mahkamah yang mengekalkan larangan berhijab di institusi pendidikan di Karnataka.
Keputusan mahkamah itu susulan bantahan berminggu-minggu terhadap keputusan kerajaan Karnataka yang melarang pelajar memakai hijab di sekolah dan kolej.
Mahkamah Tinggi Karnataka menolak semua petisyen yang mencabar perintah kerajaan mengenai hijab dengan alasan ia bukan amalan agama yang penting.
Aktivis dan ulama Islam melihat larangan Karnataka terhadap hijab sebagai diskriminasi agama dan pelanggaran hak asasi yang dijamin perlembagaan.
Keputusan mahkamah akan menyebabkan beribu-ribu gadis kehilangan peluang akademik, kata aktivis Afreen Fatima.
“Ia satu bencana. Kepalsuan mutlak,” kata seorang lagi aktivis, Safoora Zargar.
Karnataka, diperintah kerajaan Hindu Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), menyaksikan peningkatan dalam ketegangan agama.
Editor akhbar komuniti Milli Gazette, Zafarul Islam Khan berkata ulama Islam harus dirujuk berhubung isu itu untuk menentukan sama ada berhijab adalah amalan agama yang hakiki atau sebaliknya.
“Hari yang menyedihkan untuk hak asasi manusia dan agama di India,” ciapnya di Twitter.
Sebelum keputusan mahkamah, perhimpunan besar di Bangalore dan bahagian lain di negeri ini diharamkan.
Kira-kira 12 peratus daripada jumlah penduduk negeri itu terdiri umat Islam. – AlHijrah Online
